The Best Dry Body Brush
Intro: Pollutants, sweat, germs, and dead cells, all accumulate on the surface of our skin, giving it a dull, lifeless appearance. People pay good money on spa treatments for what can be done at home with a dry brush. Dry brushes remove dead skin and stimulate blood flow, revealing the healthy, glowing, youthful skin underneath.
We reviewed all the dry brushes available on the market and made a list of our five favorites. Our top pick is Belula Premium Dry Body Brush but some of the others came very close. Check out the list below:
What you should know before you buy a dry brush:
If you are new to dry brushing there are certain things to keep in mind so that you don’t end up hurting yourself or irritating your skin. Here are some tips on easing into it and making dry brushing a regular part of your skincare.
How does dry brushing help your skin?
Exfoliation: Dry brushing helps remove the dead skin cells and other impurities on the top layer of your skin, leaving you with smoother, brighter-looking skin
Detox: The slight pressure and brush strokes stimulate blood flow and activate the lymphatic system. It has the same benefits as a deep tissue massage, driving the toxins out.
Clearer skin: The removal of impurities and dirt from the epidermal layer and the cleaning out of the pores lead to a reduction in breakouts and acne. Your skin will look better than ever!
How to use a dry brush
- It’s best to do this in the shower stall so that all the dead skin debris can easily be swept away by the water.
- Start with your feet and work upwards, towards the heart.
- Overlap your strokes so that every area gets attention.
- Don’t apply too much pressure and don’t go over the same area more than twice.
- Once you’ve done your entire body, take a shower as you usually do.
- Don’t forget to thoroughly moisturize afterward.
- Don’t use a dry brush more than 2 or 3 times a week.
Do’s and don’ts of dry brushing
- Don’t overdo your dry brushing. You should feel a slight tingle but not actual pain. If it hurts, it’s a sign to stop
- Don’t dry brush over skin that is already broken. Rashes, scabs, etc, could get infected if you dry brush them.
- Don’t brush for too long. Your entire body should not take more than 10 to 12 minutes.
- Do dry brush before showering. This way the water can do its job after.
- Do moisturize thoroughly afterward. Make sure the cream or oil is absorbed into the skin. The skin needs a little TLC after dry brushing.
What to look for in a quality dry brush
Before you decide on the dry brush that is best for you, there are certain factors you need to consider. The type of bristle on your dry brush, the strength you require of it and the length of the dry brush handle that would be most convenient for you.
Bristle Type
Bristles can be of two main types, synthetic and natural. The synthetic ones will cost less but might be too scratchy and uncomfortable on the skin. Our recommendation is to go with a dry brush with natural bristles.
Now, natural fibers can be of two types, boar bristles and bristles made out of vegetable fiber, they are both gentle on the skin. For vegans, brushes with vegetable fibers are a great choice.
Bristle Strength
Dry brushes come with three different types of bristle strengths.
Soft-bristle brush: This is ideal if you are just getting into dry brushing. It takes a while to get the hang of it, and to learn the best techniques and what works for your skin. Soft bristles can be used on sensitive skin, like the face too.
Medium-bristle brush: Once you’ve been using dry brushes for a while and know how much pressure each area of the body needs, you might consider venturing into medium-bristle territory.
Firm-bristle brush: Firm bristles are only recommended for the most wizened old souls who have been using dry brushes for ages and are ready to level up. A word of caution though, no matter how long you’ve been using a dry brush, even as a pro, it’s never a good idea to use a firm brush on your face and other sensitive areas.
Dry brush handle
You’re going to want a brush that comes with a long handle, at least 16 inches, so that you can reach all the way up and down your back. Some brushes come with a long handle, some come with a cloth strap on the back for you to put your hand through.
The strap ones are great for pressure adjustment, and the handle can be kind of awkward when brushing your chest or stomach.
The best choice is the brushes that come with a detachable handle. This makes them easy to pack and gives you access to every nook and cranny.
Many brushes come as a set, with soft, firm, and wet variants for different parts of the body. The wet brush can be used with soap and water in the shower.
How much you can expect to spend on a dry brush?
The prices will vary on the basis of the size of the brush and the accessories that come with it, but your price range will be somewhere between $4 - $35
- The smaller ones without a handle cost between $4 - $8
- The single, larger ones, that come with a long handle cost between $8 - $15
- The sets with a small one, a large one with an adjustable handle, and other accessories cost between $15 - $35
