Mental Health With Us

Mental Health is the least understood subject in our society, something we consider taboo and are quick to brush under the carpet, hey, it’s difficult to talk about. We shame anyone brave enough to seek therapy or medication by calling them ‘Pagal’ or too far strayed from God and religion.

To quote Shakespeare's Hamlet; “There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio./ Than are dreamt of in your philosophy”, There are many things that faith cannot cure, sometimes we need external help, be it a mental health professional, medication or just a friend who is a good listener.

Empower With Us celebrated #MentalHealthWithUs throughout the 2nd week of October. People were encouraged to come forward and share their struggles and their success stories, to give hope to others faced with the same demons. They say misery loves company, nothing forms stronger bonds than a shared trauma. Sometimes all someone needs is to know that they are not alone.

On Thursday, October 10th, at 10:00 pm, a live Q&A session was held with Health Professionals. It was hosted by the wonderful Aliya, one of our board members; our professional guests who joined in to share their knowledge and insights were the exceptional Yumna Usmani, who has a Master's in Psychology and certifications in Human Integrative Counseling and CBT, and the incomparable Tooba Qaiser, who has a Masters in Clinical Psychology, teaches the subject at college-level and works as a Remedial Therapist and Psychologist at Therapy Works. Both these generous ladies took time out of their busy schedules to answer questions and dispense advice. 336 women tuned in to listen to the live session and 6 brave femmes joined the discussion with their questions and concerns.

The next night was a live Q&A session with the resilient women who have experienced trauma that compromised their mental health. Amber Ahmed and Shifa Lodhi discussed their struggles and 307 women tuned in solidarity.

During the week 17 women shared their personal stories or posts related to Mental Health with the #MentalHealthWithUs hashtag. They were received with open arms and unquestioned support. If our efforts have helped in lessening the burden of a soul, and have helped ease a mind in distress, we consider this campaign a resounding success!
